One of the startling realities of a great many small business owners is the vast abyss that tends to lie between their idea of starting their business and the enormous success they envision for their enterprise. They may, and often do have a basic business plan describing what the products and/or services of their business will be. They likely have some notion about the total number of people in the universe who might be willing to purchase what they offer. But seldom do we find much substance to the discussion of what they will do to reach that universe. Drawing on our deep and broad experience the Monterey bay Consulting Group helps our clients to fill in the gaps. With experience in many industries and markets we are able to construct the attainable steps that lead from a first success to the next. We can establish realistic plans for how a business can reach its next logical goal. Then we put the next set of goals in place and help our clients navigate the pathways to reach each goal as it comes along. Occasionally, a particular action plan fails to reach the desired goal. Again, we turn to our experience and find a practical path around the barriers and help to reset the plan so that goals can be reached.
There is no magic to discovering what problems a business may have. Indeed, a thoughtful interview of company employees will lead to a laundry list of problems and in many cases some excellent potential solutions. So, what’s the big deal? The first dilemma is that employees are reluctant to tell the boss what is wrong with the company. They fear for the security of their jobs, or they may not want to “rat” on their co-workers. For these reasons, having an independent, skilled outsider do this discovery exercise often produces much better results. Knowing the problems, is of course an essential starting point, however, it does not solve anything.
The next step in this process is to combine the discovery of problems with the most expansive experience to sort out which problems should be solved, and which can be ignored, at least in the short term. This demands consideration of a great many circumstances. Solving which problems will lead to the greatest positive impact on the needs of the company for the current circumstances? Which problems can be solved with the existing resources of the company? Are there secondary effects of solving a particular problem that may be either positive or negative in their consequence?
Finally, in the world of small to medium sized companies, deciding to solve a problem in a particular approach may be easy to reach. However, actually making the changes, keeping track of progress, evaluating the effectiveness of the solutions, and making sure the solution is completed and its impact is sustainable, these things may not happen. The management of small companies are constantly distracted by the urgent issues of the day. They are constantly having to deal with the “fire fight” of the moment. And, while these distractions cannot be ignored, they need to be solved, they also serve
